The class to which all of DS9's runabouts belong.
USS Defiant (NX-74205)USS Defiant
A prototype Starfleet warship, built in 2366 to fight the Borg; it was officially designated an "escort vessel". Sisko helped design it. Unfortunately, it failed its initial test runs due to being overgunned and overpowered for a ship its size; then, when the Borg threat receded, it was forgotten until Sisko requested it for the mission to locate the Founders. After that, it was permanently attached to DS9.
The Defiant has a cloaking device loaned by the Romulans, which originally was to be used only in the Gamma Quadrant. It has a crew of up to 50; and also has a Class M warp drive. According to Ron Moore on AOL, the Defiant is 545 ft. long, 350 ft. wide and 50 ft. tall.
The motto on the Defiant's bridge plaque was: "All I ask is a tall ship, and a star to steer her by." -- John Masefield
First used in "The Search, Parts I and II"; appeared in the movie Star Trek: First Contact.
In battle at the Chin'toka system, the Defiant was hit by a Breen energy dissipator. It was destroyed immediately after its crew abandoned ship.

USS GanderA runabout assigned to DS9; taken by Ezri to search for Worf. It was attacked by Jem'Hadar, and destroyed after Ezri and Worf abandoned it. (Note: The script and the closed captioning spell it "Ganges", which of course is the name of a runabout that was destroyed in the 2nd season; obviously a script error that TPTB tried to cover by dubbing the name "Gander" into the audio track. Gander is the name of a river in Canada, thus keeping up the tradition of naming runabouts after Earth rivers.)

A Klingon bird-of-prey which was part of the Alpha Quadrant fleet defeated by the Breen at Chin'toka. It was the only ship not affected by the Breen energy dissipators, due to the fact that just before the battle, the chief engineer had adjusted the tritium intermix to compensate for a containment problem in the warp core. Martok ordered every Klingon ship to make the same adjustment.
