Sentient Races
Altorans
Ah-Kel claimed that he and Ro-Kel had bought the objet d'arte they were trying to sell from an Altoran trader.
Andorians- "Vortex"
A race of blue-skinned humanoids with white hair and antennae. One of their freighters was due at the station.
- "The Nagus"
Quark told Morn a joke involving an Andorian.
Antedians- "The Nagus", "Homefront"
An Antedian transport wanted to leave DS9 a day early.
Arbazan- "Doctor Bashir, I Presume"
A humanoid member race of the Federation. According to Vadosia, they are sexually repressed.
Argosians- "The Forsaken"
An Argosian lieutenant once threw a drink in Sisko's face. Curzon Dax punched Sisko to stop him from retaliating.
Argrathi- "Dax"
A race in the Gamma Quadrant, with grayish skin and ridges. On a mission to their homeworld, O'Brien got curious about their technology and asked too many questions, for which he was arrested and charged with espionage. By the time word got back to the station, the punishment had been carried out: the Argrathi authorities implanted in him an interactive program containing memories of twenty years of incarceration. This method, according to the Argrathi, is modeled to fit the personality of the offender, and is more efficient than maintaining an actual prison system.
Bajorans- "Hard Time"
Also known collectively as the Bajora.
Native planet:Bajor (Alpha Quadrant)
Appearance:Bajorans closely resemble humans, but have a ridge running up the nose, with three to six grooves across the ridge. (Note: in early DS9 episodes, the Bajorans, including Kira, had an additional, V-shaped ridge between the eyebrows, which had been seen before on Ro Laren, a recurring TNG character who was the first Bajoran seen on Star Trek. The V-shape later disappeared.)
Physiology:The Bajoran gestation period is less than five months; mother and baby vascularize very quickly. Morning sickness is unheard of, but one symptom of pregnancy is uncontrollable sneezing. Traditional birthing techniques emphasize relaxation for the mother, aided by ceremonial rhythms. Painless birth is the norm.
Special advantages/disadvantages:None, with the exception of some religiously-trained people (such as Kai Opaka) who can "read the pagh" by grasping a person's ear. "The Storyteller" suggests a certain level of subconscious telekinetic ability. In general, though, Bajorans seem to be no more or less psionically endowed than humans.
History:Bajoran culture was flourishing when humans were not yet walking erect. Some 800 years ago (the 1500's on Earth), they built light-powered vessels to explore their solar system (before either humans or Cardassians had space travel). Bajorans were a peaceful people until they were conquered by the Cardassian Empire, which killed 15 million of them, enslaving or exiling the rest. During the 60-year Occupation, however, a rebel movement grew, often employing terrorism. The Occupation ended in 2369.
Culture:Bajorans are deeply spiritual, with a religion centering on the Prophets, who, they believe, sent them the Orbs to guide them. Bajorans give their family name first, their given name second. The sexes are equal, and women tend to be assertive. Death customs are more concerned with the "pagh" or soul than the remains.
Other:Most Bajorans wear a chained earring in the right ear, the exact significance of which has not yet been revealed. The earrings have a family imprint which can be used for identification.
BardeezansOne of their merchant ships left DS9 for the Gamma Quadrant shortly after Gul Dukat was kidnapped.
Benzenites- "The Maquis, Part I"
A race, members of the Federation, who need breathing tubes to survive in an oxygen atmosphere. Sisko knew one, Laporin, at the Academy. (Spelled "Benzites" in the ST Encyclopedia.)
Betazoids- "Apocalypse Rising"
The natives of Betazed. They are a humanoid race of telepath/empaths. They cannot, however, "read" Ferengis, Dopterians, or Changelings.
BoliansA race of blue-skinned humanoids with a ridge running down the center of the face, originating on Bolias in the Alpha Quadrant (also called Bolarus). A Bolian freighter was towed to a lower dock when all three upper pylons at DS9 failed.
- "Whispers"
Another was robbed by the Maquis of photon launchers.
- "Tribunal"
Marriages involving three or possibly more people are customary among Bolians.
Borg- "Field of Fire"
A race of mechanized humanoids from the Delta Quadrant who invaded Federation space in 2366-67. Among the ships destroyed by them at Wolf 359 was the USS Saratoga, on which Sisko was serving as first officer; Jennifer Sisko was killed there.
Boslics- "Emissary"
A race of humanoids. Quark has a female friend of this race, a freighter captain named Rionoj. Another Boslic captain, Tilikia, appeared in "Sons of Mogh".
BreenA race whose homeworld is a frozen wasteland. They have no blood. They use organically-based ships ("Scorpion" [VOY]). The Breen wear environmental suits in warm temperatures; it is said by some that none have ever seen a Breen unsuited.
The Breen became allies of the Dominion in 2375.
Byzallians- "'Til Death Do Us Part"
They wanted to move their conference on DS9 up by a week.
Cardassians- "Defiant"
Native planet:
Cardassia Prime (Alpha Quadrant)
Appearance:Cardassians are grayish-skinned, with scaled ridges around the eyes, running from the ears, and down each side of their necks, as well as a spoon shape on their foreheads and chests. Their hair is black.
Physiology:They are more comfortable in warmer temperatures and dimmer light than Bajorans or humans.
Special advantages/disadvantages:They are trained from early childhood to have photographic memories and to resist telepathic reading. Cardassians have slightly less acute hearing than humans.
History:Cardassians were once a peaceful people, but lack of resources on their homeworld drove them to become conquerors. They were at war with the Federation for many years until an uneasy truce was achieved in 2366. In addition, the Cardassian Empire occupied Bajor for 60 years (2309-69), enslaving and brutalizing the inhabitants. After the Bajoran Occupation, there was a dissident movement in 2370-71 toward a more moderate state, which the military and Obsidian Order tried to suppress. In 2372, the civilians took over the government; shortly thereafter, the Klingon Empire began a war with the Cardassians, which ended in 2373 when Cardassia joined the Dominion and drove the Klingons out with the help of the Jem'Hadar.
Culture:In 2375, Legate Damar began a resistance movement against the Dominion; Cardassian ships turned against their former allies in the last battle of the war, prompting the Dominion to begin leveling cities and exterminating citizens. 800 million Cardassians were reported dead in the massacre.
Cardassian families are very close-knit, with up to four generations in one household. Women can achieve positions of power; in fact, the sciences are female-dominated, as men are thought not to have a head for them. Overt irritability toward someone of the opposite sex is considered flirting. Their funeral rites forbid non-Cardassians from viewing the body. Cardassian culture is authoritarian; obedience to the state is considered the top priority of all citizens.
Other:In the Cardassian justice system, trials are held only to make an example of the accused, with verdicts and sentences determined well in advance.
ChangelingsThe Founders' name for themselves, originally an insult, which they adopted as a gesture of defiance.
Native planet:Unknown, though they are believed to have originated in the Gamma Quadrant. The planet designated LS6 (in "The Alternate") is a strong candidate in my opinion, based on the pillar found there, which was also on the homeworld in the Omarion Nebula where Odo found his people.
Appearance:Their natural form is a gelatinous liquid, gold/amber in color. (The liquid form of an ill Changeling often turns to dark blue.)
Physiology:Changelings have no respiratory, digestive, or circulatory system. Their lifespan is at least 300 years, and probably much longer. They are small, about a quarter of a liter, in infancy, but grow in mass as their shapeshifting abilities develop. They are able to take humanoid form after several months. (Presumably this is much faster for infants who have the benefit of the Great Link.) If part of a Changeling is separated from the main mass, it will revert to liquid and attempt to rejoin the rest of its body (this is the reason for the blood testings used to screen for infiltrating Changelings.) Their morphogenic matrix is most malleable at 17 degrees Celsius. A dead Changeling becomes an ashlike substance.
Special advantages/disadvantages:Changelings can alter their biomolecular structure, density, and mass at will, and can appear to be any creature or object. A skilled Changeling can be indistinguishable from the thing or person they are imitating, even by tricorder. However, they must revert to liquid to rest at least once every 16 hours. They have no need to eat or drink, and therefore never evolved a sense of taste or smell. They cannot be "read" by Betazoids, although they can share thoughts and memories among themselves when two or more merge in liquid form. One Changeling can induce another to go liquid by touching the other and going liquid themselves; this is referred to as linking. (Note: In "Broken Link", the Founders were able to deprive Odo of his shapeshifting ability and force him into a solid form, as a human, which lasted until "The Begotten".)
History:The Changelings, who originally evolved from a solid race, long ago roamed the stars peacefully seeking knowledge, but were persecuted because of their shapeshifting abilities, until they settled on a Class M rogue planet in the Omarion Nebula and created the Dominion. Some years ago, they sent 100 newly formed infants away as explorers, implanted with a homing urge; among them was Odo.
Culture:The foundation of Changeling society is the Great Link (which see under Miscellaneous [General]) . They have an ingrained sense of order, as well as a taboo/law against harming others of their race. The Founders are regarded as gods by the Vorta and the Jem'Hadar; most other people in the Gamma Quadrant seem to consider them myths.
Other:Changelings feel no need for names, the sole known exceptions being Odo and Laas (both of whom were raised outside the Great Link). They are apparently experts at genetic manipulation, or else they control another race who are.
DopteriansA race, distantly related to the Ferengi; they are of similarly short stature, but have hardly any ears. Odo guessed correctly that they too cannot be read by Betazoids.
Dosi- "The Forsaken"
The first race from the Gamma Quadrant to enter into business negotiations with the Ferengi, for tulaberry wine. They are humanoid with faces that appear painted; they are warlike, but share the Ferengi interest in profit.
El-Aurians- "Rules of Acquisition"
A humanoid race from the Delta Quadrant, extremely long-lived, who became refugees when their planet was destroyed by the Borg. They are especially gifted at listening to people, drawing them out in conversation.
Elaysians- "Rivals"
A humanoid species from a low-gravity planet. Their mobility is severely limited in "normal" gravity, which is why very few leave the homeworld. Melora Pazlar, however, did, becoming the first Elaysian in Starfleet.
Ennis- "Melora"
A people in the Gamma Quadrant, who fought with another people, the Nol-Ennis, on their home planet, until their world's leaders put both on a moon where they could continue their war forever without killing innocent people. They are unable to die permanently, due to artificial microbes that keep resurrecting the body indefinitely. However, the microbes are environment-specific, meaning that no one can leave the moon if they have died there at least once. Thus they endure this hell for eternity, but are unwilling to stop fighting.
Fek'Ihri- "Battle Lines"
A race conquered by Kahless some 1400 years ago using the Sword of Kahless.
Ferengi- "The Sword of Kahless"
Native planet:
Ferenginar (Alpha Quadrant)
Appearance:A race of humanoids, short in stature, with orangish skin, bald heads, and enormous ears; females' ears are somewhat smaller.
Physiology:Apparently Ferengi internal organs are "sideways", with ascending and descending ribs, and upper and lower lungs. Their ears are erogenous zones. Also, they lose their first set of ears in childhood. Ferengi blood pressure is higher than that of humans.
Special advantages/disadvantages:Ferengi hearing, as one might expect, is amazingly acute, and can be tuned directionally. An ear infection can be fatal if not treated. Possibly due to their four-lobed brain structure, Ferengi cannot be "read" by Betazoids.
History:There was once a time when Ferengi were not the avid capitalists they are now. This, however, is not generally known, even by Ferengi. The Ferengi bought warp drive technology rather than developing it on their own. Politically, their attitude toward the Federation ranges from hostile to neutral.
Culture:Everything in Ferengi society is geared toward making profit. They consider school a waste of time; apparently young Ferengi are expected to learn through personal experience only. When a young Ferengi male leaves home to be on his own, he traditionally sells his boyhood possessions for capital. Ferengi women (53.5% of the population) are kept naked and subservient on Ferenginar, and are forbidden from making their own profit or traveling. They traditionally chew the males' food for them. Ferengi death rituals forbid autopsy; if the deceased was a Ferengi of particular note (such as a Grand Nagus), vacuum-desiccated portions of the body are sold as collectors' items (one body can generally produce 52 discs). While visiting another Ferengi's home, a Ferengi customarily imprints a legal waiver and pays an admission fee. Pregnancy is considered a rental. Ferengi weddings include a bridal auction and latinum dancers.
Other:Ferengi diet consists mostly of insects, worms, and similar creatures native to their world. Large lobes are proverbial as a sign of intelligence, boldness, and virility.
FlaxiansThe race from which Retaya hailed. Flaxian assassins favor explosives using a pheromonic sensor.
Founders- "Improbable Cause"
The creators and rulers of the Dominion. For more, see Changelings, above.
FrunaliansThree of their science vessels contacted the station for docking rights, after the discovery of the wormhole.
Galadorans- "Emissary"
The natives of Galador II. They had no ships in the Bajoran sector, which cast suspicion on a Galador freighter that turned out to have been used as the "getaway" ship in the abduction of Gul Dukat.
Galipotans- "The Maquis, Part I"
A race that refuses to acknowledge the concept of time, or so Garak remarked when a Galipotan freighter was late with some merchandise for him, although he added that they do make magnificent sweaters.
Gallamites- "The Wire"
A species with transparent skulls. Their brains are twice the size of those of Trills, Bajorans, or Humans. Dax had accepted a dinner invitation from a Gallamite captain, much to Kira's amazement.
- "The Maquis, Part I"
They were supplying duranium to Starfleet for the war.
Gorn- "Penumbra"
A race of reptilian beings, one of whom James Kirk once fought; Sisko was tempted to ask Kirk about it.
Grazerites- "Trials and Tribble-ations"; see also the TOS episode "Arena"
A peaceful race, members of the Federation. The President of the Federation Council, Jaresh-Inyo, is a Grazerite.
Halanans- "Homefront"/"Paradise Lost"
A humanoid, pointed-eared species with psychoprojective telepathy. They are prone to lose control of their powers under emotional stress. They also mate for life.
Hunters- "Second Sight"
A humanoid, reptilian race from the Gamma Quadrant who participate in a blood sport in which they pursue an intelligent being bred for the purpose -- a Tosk.
Hupyrians- "Captive Pursuit"
A tall humanoid race. Servants from this species are renowned for their devotion to their employers. Hupyrian servants take an oath to speak only to their masters.
Hur'q- "The Nagus", "Prophet Motive"
A race who conquered Qo'Nos 1000 years ago and took the Sword of Kahless. Hur'q is the Klingon word for "outsiders". They were from the Gamma Quadrant, though this was unknown at the time. Their homeworld seemed to be long abandoned when Kor, Dax, and Worf went there and found the Sword in what was once their Central Museum.
Iconians- "The Sword of Kahless"
A race, now extinct, who controlled a huge interstellar empire about 200,000 years ago. With the aid of the "gateways" they created, they could travel instantaneously over vast distances. Worf was on an away team from the Enterprise-D that discovered one of these gateways (see the TNG episode "Contagion"). The Dominion discovered another on Vandros IV; its scientists were working on restoring it when the Jem'Hadar guards rebelled and seized control of it. However, it was destroyed by a joint mission of the Defiant crew and Omet'iklan's unit before work could be completed.
Idanians- "To the Death"
A very secretive humanoid race who customarily wear hoods. (In the book The DS9 Companion, it was confirmed that they are the ones who make I'danian spice pudding.)
Jem'Hadar- "A Simple Investigation"
The soldiers of the Dominion.
Native planet:Unknown (probably in the Gamma Quadrant)
Appearance:Humanoid-shaped, with heavily scaled skin. Their faces are ridged with small horns. Their alligator-like appearance develops when they reach adolescence; as infants, they resemble human babies.
Physiology:Jem'Hadar are the result of extensive genetic tinkering. There are no females of their race; they are bred in birthing chambers. After emerging, they grow to adulthood within three days. Their metabolic rates are extremely high. They have an inbuilt deficiency in a certain isogenic enzyme, called Ketracel-white or simply "white", without which they will go into withdrawal and eventually die from circulatory shutdown. They have no need for sleep, or for sustenance other than "white". Few Jem'Hadar live as long as 15 years; a 20-year-old is considered an honored elder. None have ever reached age 30.
Special advantages/disadvantages:Jem'Hadar are practically born knowing how to fight and kill. Their growth in language and cognitive ability is just as rapid as their physical maturation. They have excellent vision. The Jem'Hadar's main disadvantage is their dependency on "white": a means of ensuring the control of the Founders, who supply the enzyme through the Vorta. They have a personal cloaking field which appears to be natural, referred to as "shrouding". This ability is lost when they are deprived of "white".
History:The story of how the Jem'Hadar became as they are is unknown. In 2374, after the disappearance of the Dominion fleet in the Bajoran wormhole in "Sacrifice of Angels", a new breed of Jem'Hadar appeared in the Alpha Quadrant (see Alphas under Gamma Quadrant).
Culture:The Jem'Hadar revere the Founders as gods, and are fanatically loyal. They will suicide if they fail to protect a Founder. As for other races, anyone who is not a Founder, Vorta, or Jem'Hadar is pond scum. War, and serving the Founders, are their only reason for existence, as far as they are concerned. One of their rules, enforced by the Vorta, is, "If the death of one will make the rest stronger, he dies"; another slogan is "Victory is life". (On very rare occasions, a few Jem'Hadar have been known to rebel.)
Other:The Jem'Hadar have weapons which seem to leave an anticoagulant in the blood.
KaleansAliens who once cornered Sisko and Dax on Rochani III.
Karemma- "Dramatis Personae"
A race from the Gamma Quadrant, minor members of the Dominion. Quark negotiated a deal with them to sell tulaberry wine to the Ferengi.
- "Rules of Acquisition"
They traded with the Federation behind the Dominion's back, using the Ferengi as intermediaries.
Kelleruns- "Starship Down"
A race who were at war with the T'Lani for years until they finally made peace, and with the aid of Bashir and O'Brien, helped destroy the Harvesters. Their leaders also made a secret pact with the T'Lani government to kill everyone who knew the formula for the Harvesters -- including O'Brien and Bashir -- to ensure that it would never be used again.
Kelvans- "Armageddon Game"
Worf said he had once confronted Kelvans twice his size, and lived to tell the tale.
Klaestrons- "Time's Orphan"
A humanoid race from Klaestron IV. In 2339, they had a civil war; Curzon Dax was a Federation mediator there at the time. The Klaestrons are allies of the Cardassians, and have an extradition treaty with the Federation, but not with Bajor.
Klingons- "Dax"
A race who pride themselves on their warrior heritage and code of honor. They are humanoid, with bony ridges running up from the nose and covering the forehead; they usually have long dark hair, beards (on males), dark skin, and a fierce appearance. They don't care much for cold. Klingons were once enemies of the Federation, but became allies; the treaty lasted until 2372, when the Federation condemned the Klingons' invasion of Cardassia. They occupied several Cardassian colonies from early 2372 to mid 2373, when Cardassia joined the Dominion. Gowron reinstated the Khitomer Accords at this time.
Worf said the Klingons slew their gods a millennium ago, because they were more trouble than they were worth.
- "Homefront"
O'Brien, Bashir, and Odo were surprised to find that the Klingons known in 2268 looked much more "human", without the ridges; Worf said it was a matter Klingons do not discuss with outsiders.
Kobheerians- "Trials and Tribble-ations"
A Federation race; Marritza came to DS9 on one of their ships.
- "Duet"
The Defiant posed as a Kobheerian vessel when entering Cardassian space.
Kobliads- "Second Skin"
A race which is dying out and needs deuridium to stabilize their cellular structure and prolong their lifespans. Some resort to stealing it, although the Federation is working to provide it.
Kotakians- "The Passenger"
Gul Dukat came to DS9 as an unregistered passenger on one of their ships.
Kressari- "The Maquis, Part I"
A species who don't have a military; known primarily as botanical DNA traders, until it was learned that the Cardassians were using them to secretly arm the Circle.
Letheans- "The Circle"
A mostly humanoid species, known for their stubbornness. They have a telepathic attack: the victim's consciousness is trapped inside a representation of his or her own mind while a representation of the Lethean slowly destroys it. Meanwhile the victim's body goes into a coma and in most cases eventually dies.
- "Distant Voices"
There is another, less lethal form of this attack, used for simple mindreading; Soto, a Lethean, used this technique on Kor.
Lissepians- "The Sword of Kahless"
A race of traders, often used as intermediaries by the Cardassians. The captain of a Lissepian cargo ship swapped Jake and Nog a load of self-sealing stem bolts for some yamok sauce.
- "Progress"
Kira's cover story for her mission to rescue Li Nalas was that her ship was a Lissepian transport.
- "The Homecoming"
One of their supply ships was attacked by a Maquis interceptor, with no serious damage.
Lothra- "Heart of Stone"
A race of hydrogen breathers. Dax knew one who fell in love with an oxygene; the couple were together for 57 years despite being able to spend only 40 minutes a day in the same room without breathing apparatuses.
Lurians- "Melora"
A vaguely humanoid-shaped race in the Alpha Quadrant, originating on Luria. They have two stomachs, at least two hearts, and at least four lungs; they also like to sleep in a tub of bubbling mud. Lurian death customs include bringing gifts of food and drink to the funeral, to sustain the deceased in the afterlife.
Lytasians- "Who Mourns for Morn?"
273 of them once slaughtered ten lone Ferengi, in what is known to the Ferengi as the Battle of Prexnak.
Malgorians- "The Magnificent Ferengi"
A race with two heads. Mullibok compared Kira to one because she couldn't make up her mind.
Manchovites- "Progress"
A race to whom Hagath and Gaila had sold 150,000 phaser rifles, along with 100,000 to the other side in a war which was later ended by an armistice.
Minnobia- "Business As Usual"
A race at war against the Vek.
Miradorns- "Business As Usual"
A humanoid species, grayish-skinned, in which twins have a symbiotic bond, and are essentially two halves of one person. Quark called them a quarrelsome people.
- "Vortex"
They had signed a non-aggression pact with the Dominion.
nanites- "Call to Arms"
Tiny, intelligent biomechanical creatures. Bashir likened the microbes infecting the Ennis and Nol-Ennis to them.
Nausicaans- "Battle Lines"
Tall, fanged humanoids. Some Nausicaan raiders had broken into the central museum on Remmil VI.
- "Heart of Stone"
Garak speculated that a Nausicaan whose wedding suit he had misplaced might be responsible for the explosion in his shop.
- "Improbable Cause"
Two Nausicaans working for Brunt beat up Quark and were arrested by Odo. Most Nausicaan games hurt; for example, Brunt's two "friends" threw darts at each other.
Nol-Ennis -- See Ennis, above.- "Bar Association"
Pakleds
A race not known for their neatness. When forced to share Rom's quarters, Quark declared he wouldn't tolerate living like a Pakled refuse merchant.
Paradans- "Prophet Motive"
A race which had been embroiled in a civil war for twelve years when peace talks were scheduled to take place on DS9. They have a personal odor which changes according to mood and becomes strong when they are angry. O'Brien went to Parada to be briefed on security for the talks; he was kidnapped by the government and replaced by a replicant. He was subsequently rescued by rebels.
Peljenites- "Whispers"
Sisko had convinced them to exchange ambassadors with the Federation.
Petarians- "Family Business"
The people for whom Kasidy Yates was shipping biomatter.
Prophets -- See wormhole aliens, below.- "Family Business"
Proxcinians
A race engaged in a war which was just heating up.
Pygorians- "Business As Usual"
A race who sold weapons to Sakonna through Quark.
Pythrons- "The Maquis, Part II"
A race, two of whom, an elderly couple, were conned by Martus and filed a complaint against him, which they dropped, only to reinstate it later.
Rakhari- "Rivals"
The natives of Rakhar. The standard punishment for dissidents is the death of their families. All crimes are considered serious, but there are no trials. Bigamy is customary. The Rakhari government is not interested in contact with the Alpha Quadrant.
Reegrunions- "Vortex"
The species from which Plix Tixiplik hailed.
Rigellians- "Sanctuary"
Odo, in the Ganges, hid under one of their freighters in order to get Croden off DS9 and past Ah-Kel.
Romulans- "Vortex"
A race closely resembling Vulcans but with slight forehead ridges. They are generally hostile to the Federation. Their government, however, has loaned Starfleet a cloaking device for the Defiant, to be used only in the Gamma Quadrant, in exchange for intelligence on the Dominion. (This treaty seems to have been modified to allow use of the cloaking device in the Alpha Quadrant as well.)
- "The Search, Part I", "Defiant"
The Romulans had not themselves sent ships into the Gamma Quadrant. The loan of the cloaking device was their first treaty with the Federation in many years.
- "Visionary"
They sent ships to join the Starfleet/Klingon fleet at DS9.
- "By Inferno's Light"
They had signed a non-aggression pact with the Dominion.
- "Call to Arms"
Among the predictions made by Bashir's charges was that the Romulans would abandon their pact with the Dominion in the next year ("Statistical Probabilities"); Sisko later successfully schemed to bring them into the war ("In the Pale Moonlight").
RujiA race, to which a pair of 7-foot-tall twin sisters met by Curzon Dax and Sisko belonged.
Saltah'nah- "A Man Alone"
An ancient race in the Gamma Quadrant who destroyed themselves because of a power struggle between its leaders. They left behind a telepathic archive contained in a group of energy spheres that was found by the crew of the Toh'Kaht.
Serilians- "Dramatis Personae"
An ambassador from this race was due to arrive on the station; Kira was discussing it with Odo as Quark tried to get a picture of her.
Skrreeans- "Meridian"
A people from the Gamma Quadrant, who became refugees when the T'Rogorans, who had enslaved them for centuries, were conquered by the Dominion. Their bumpy skin tends to flake off. They are matriarchal, and consider men too emotional to be good leaders. Three million Skrreeans came through the wormhole, looking for Kentanna, their legendary promised land, which Haneek, their de facto leader, believed was Bajor. However, her petition for her people to settle there was rejected. Although Haneek objected that her people, who are farmers, could have benefited Bajor, she accepted the alternative of settling on Draylon II instead.
Son'a- "Sanctuary"
A race apparently friendly to the Dominion. (They were featured in the film Star Trek: Insurrection, in which it was said that they make Ketracel-white.)
Subytt- "Penumbra"
One of their freighters was smuggling defective isolinear rods to Bajor, which Quark reported to Odo. Much to Odo's surprise, he found it to be the truth. He arrested the first officer and two crew members.
Talarians- "The Homecoming"
A race who apparently can get drunk on raktajino.
Talavians- "A Simple Investigation"
Captain Livara was supposedly of this race.
- "Things Past"
A Talavian freighter docked at DS9; the hunter probe that killed Furel and Lupaza was on its hull.
Tarahongians- "The Darkness and the Light"
The natives of Tarahong, said by Quark to be incredibly gullible.
Tarkaleans- "The Nagus"
A Tarkalean was stabbed in Quark's by the older Molly O'Brien, because he got in her way as she was trying to escape after being forced out of the holosuite. He soon recovered, but wasn't interested in "excuses" and filed charges against her for assault with a deadly weapon.
Tavnians- "Time's Orphan"
A race with strict customs regarding separation of the sexes. Male children are raised only by males, and females only by females; neither sex is told of the other's existence until age 16. A male child is considered the property of the mother's husband (presumably girls are the property of the father's wife as well). At a Tavnian wedding, the groom must stand in front of his family and friends and declare his reasons for wanting to marry the bride; if any doubt his sincerity, they can challenge the validity of the marriage.
Tellarites- "The Muse"
A race of shortish humanoids with piglike snouts, members of the Federation. Kono beamed onto a Tellarite freighter departing DS9, in order to avoid questioning.
Terrellians- "Shadowplay"
Three of them were bragging about their prowess at dom-jot. Nog arranged a game with them, himself, and Jake, which was cancelled due to a double date.
- "Life Support"
Odo planned to question some visiting Terrellians about the weapon placed in a wall panel.
Tholians- "Visionary"
At Jake's instigation, Odo claimed that Nog and Jake had been seen breaking into the Tholian ambassador's quarters.
- "Life Support"
There was a Tholian observer killed at the Antwerp Conference.
- "Homefront"
They are renowned for their punctuality. Kasidy Yates was to rendezvous with one of their freighters to deliver medical supplies, as they had a viral infection on one of their colonies.
- "For the Cause"
They had signed a non-aggression pact with the Dominion.
T'Lani -- See Kelleruns, above.- "Call to Arms"
Tosk
A reptilian race from the Gamma Quadrant, the prey in a blood sport played by the Hunters, to whom they symbolize all that is noble. They are bred solely for the purpose of leading a thrilling chase, and being caught alive is a disgrace. Tosk store liquid nutrients in plasmic fibers throughout their bodies, and need only 17 minutes of sleep per rotation. They also have a natural personal cloaking field. (Note: when the Jem'Hadar were introduced in the episode "The Jem'Hadar", with their cloaking field, a notation in the script indicated that the thought behind it was that the Jem'Hadar were bred by the same people who had bred the Tosk).
Trelonians- "Captive Pursuit"
The race to which General Yiri belonged.
Trills- "Profit and Loss"
A double species.
Native planet:Trill (Alpha Quadrant)
Appearance:Trill humanoids closely resemble humans, but have irregularly-shaped brownish spots running down each side of their bodies (although Odan, a Trill seen in "The Host" [TNG], had no spots but had forehead ridges). Trill symbionts resemble large slugs.
Physiology:Cold hands are a "peculiarity" of the Trill. Joined Trills are especially susceptible to insect bites due to the biochemical connection between host and symbiont. Trills also don't care for heat.
Special advantages/disadvantages:The main advantage of joined Trills is the centuries' worth of memories and knowledge available to them via their connection to the symbiont. However, 93 hours after joining, and thereafter, neither host nor symbiont can survive without the other, dying in a few hours if separated. Trill Guardians are apparently trained in the telepathic arts, though other Trills have shown no sign of them. In "The Host" [TNG], it was established that symbionts were damaged by transporters, but this was dropped for DS9.
History:For thousands of years, Trill humanoids and symbionts have existed in partnership, the humanoids acting as hosts to the symbionts. It is unknown how this arrangement began.
Culture:Joining is the highest honor in Trill society. However, only a relative few Trills are joined. Only 300 symbionts on average are available at any given time, so competition amid potential hosts, both academic and athletic, is fierce. Host candidates are accepted in their early to mid 20's; they train for three years.
Other:Officially, only 1 in 1000 Trills are physically capable of being joined. (The number is actually closer to half the population, but this fact is suppressed to protect the symbionts from becoming "commodities"). The Symbiosis Commission also claims that unsuitable hosts reject the symbiont in 3-4 days; yet Joran Belar carried the Dax symbiont for six months. Jadzia Dax once claimed that Trills consider sexual desire immature, but her own later behavior (as well as Curzon Dax's) seems to contradict this.
T'RogoransA slaver race in the Gamma Quadrant, masters of the Skrreeans for 800 years until they themselves were conquered by a race belonging to the Dominion.
Tygarians- "Sanctuary"
A race that had a freighter docked at DS9, on which Li Nalas tried to stow away.
Tzenkethi- "The Homecoming"
A race with which the Federation has had at least one war, in which Sisko served. Their leader is called the Autarch. In response to a coup on their homeworld, the Defiant went on a patrol mission to the Tzenkethi border. However, reports of the coup turned out to be a ploy by the Dominion.
Valerians- "The Adversary"
A race that used to supply dolamide to the Cardassians. Kira suspected that they were still doing so.
Varalans- "Dramatis Personae"
A humanoid race, native planet Varala. They were the ones who discovered Laas, and on whom he based his humanoid appearance.
Vek -- See Minnobia, above.- "Chimera"
Verillians
A race at war, with whom Farrakk was supposed to open negotiations on Hagath's behalf. However, he took a vacation on Risa instead, resulting in Hagath losing the deal to the Metron Consortium.
Vorta- "Business as Usual"
A race in the Gamma Quadrant, humanoid, with black hair, blue eyes, and ridged earlobes. Eris, the first Vorta encountered on the series, had the ability to produce a telekinetic sphere, but no other Vorta ever demonstrated this power. (Speculation: Eris may have been a member of a special line of Vorta bred with the ability, or she may have been given it for the specific mission she was on.)
VulcansThe Vorta function as the Founders' chief contacts with their subjects. The Jem'Hadar answer to them; every troop of Jem'Hadar is supervised by a Vorta who dispenses their supply of Ketracel-white. The Vorta were engineered by the Founders. They have poor eyesight and a genetic inability to appreciate aesthetics, but their hearing is quite good, and they are immune to most forms of poison. The Vorta are also experts at cloning. They are supposed to commit suicide if captured.
In "Treachery, Faith and the Great River", we learned several things, including the fact that all Vorta have a termination implant in their brain stems. Their sense of taste is limited; practically the only foods they enjoy are kava nuts and rippleberries from their homeworld. According to their legends, their relationship with the Founders began when they were primitive apelike forest dwellers: they sheltered an injured Changeling who was being chased by solids, and in gratitude the Changeling promised that they would become part of a great galactic empire.
A humanoid race, with slightly greenish or dark brown skin, pointed ears, and slanted eyebrows. They are peaceful and culturally devoted to logic and suppression of emotion. Quark was astonished that Sakonna, a Vulcan, wanted to buy weapons.
- "The Maquis, Part I"
Eddington made off with the CFI replicators in a Vulcan freighter.
Wadi- "For the Cause"
A race from the Gamma Quadrant, discovered by a Vulcan ship. Theirs was the first official delegation from the Gamma Quadrant to DS9, led by Master Surchid Falow. On arriving, the Wadi made a beeline for Quark's, where they gamed all night and into the next day.
wormhole aliens- "Move Along Home"
The inhabitants of the Bajoran wormhole, who are believed by the Bajorans to be the Prophets. They live outside linear time, and created the wormhole. Sisko made first contact with them, and was able to gain the beings' agreement for the wormhole to be used as a corridor to and from the Gamma Quadrant. The beings are able to abolish and restore it instantly. When communicating with a linear being, they appear in the form of people known to that person.
Xepolites- "Emissary", "Prophet Motive", "Accession", "Sacrifice of Angels", etc.
A species through whom the Cardassians have at times smuggled things. Unlike the Lissepians, they have never been caught. Dukat guessed that a Xepolite free trader was carrying weapons from the Cardassians into the Demilitarized Zone.
Yalosians- "The Maquis, Part II"
A race that breathes an atmosphere of 60% nitrogen, 10% benzine, and 30% hydrogen fluoride, and can't see into the red and orange part of the color spectrum. An ambassador of this race was coming to the station.
Yelikans- "Improbable Cause"
A transport of theirs was leaving DS9.
Yridians- "The Homecoming"
A race who often deal in information. Sisko's line mentioning them as the race through whom the Cardassians had armed the Circle was a script error; it was actually the Kressari.
- "The Maquis, Part I"
Garak speculated that a Yridian to whom he owed money was possibly responsible for the explosion in his shop.
Zevians- "Improbable Cause"
Odo brought Sisko a report on a smuggling ring, and asked if he should notify the Zevian authorities.
- "His Way"
