They were typically 11 meters high, built of hundreds of stones that were carved and fitted so tightly that no mortar was needed. The Circle rose to power in early 2370, and mounted a successful coup of the provisional government; they also took over DS9. However, Kira and Dax managed to bring to the Chamber of Ministers evidence that the Circle was secretly being armed by the Cardassians, unknown even to its leader, Minister Jaro Essa. This ended the coup and seems to have broken the Circle for good.
"comfort women"- "The Homecoming"/"The Circle"/"The Siege"

Cult of the Pah-Wraith- "Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night"
Apparently an ancient religious sect on Bajor, considered a joke by the mainstream Prophet worshippers. In 2375, after the Orbs went dark, the cult was revived due to the widespread feeling that Bajor had been abandoned by the Prophets. The cult believed that the disappearance of the Prophets would herald a new era for Bajor. They distinguish themselves from the Prophet worshippers by wearing red armbands, and red earrings in the left ear. A member of the cult tried to assassinate Sisko on Earth.

A terrible cloudlike creature that menaces a Bajoran village for five nights in a row at the end of every harvest. In reality, it is an illusion created by the first Sirah from a fragment of one of the Orbs, in order to give the villagers a common enemy. During its appearances, the Sirah ritually recites a story of the villagers' strength and unity, inspiring them to drive it away with thoughts of defiance.
d'jarras- "The Storyteller"

A lamp for the dead, customarily lit by a Bajoran to pray for a recently lost loved one. (Pronounced "duranya" by Kira.)
Eighth Prophecy- "Shakaar"
The topic of Bareil's speech at DS9's Bajoran shrine. His interpretation was an unorthodox one, with which Kira passionately disagreed.
Emissary- "Shadowplay"
In Bajoran belief, someone prophesied to find the Celestial Temple and so become the savior of Bajor. The ancient texts say that the Emissary will be someone called by the Prophets, who will find the Celestial Temple, and that the Prophets will give him his life back. There are hundreds of prophecies concerning this figure. It is generally accepted by most Bajorans that Starfleet officer Benjamin Sisko, who arrived to command Deep Space Nine shortly after the Occupation's end, was the Emissary. Sisko himself eventually came to accept his status, particularly after the brief period when Akorem Laan claimed the title.
First MinisterThe Emissary had an importance to the Prophets themselves, as the linear being who was destined to perform certain tasks vital to their fight against the pah-wraiths. One task was to free the Prophet and pah-wraith whose battle would have decided the outcome of the Reckoning. Another was to release a Prophet imprisoned in the Orb of the Emissary on Tyree, so that it could cast out the pah-wraith that desecrated the Celestial Temple. The last task was to cast the Tome of the Kosst Amojan into the Bajoran Fire Caves, sealing the pah-wraiths in their prison for eternity. After this act, the Emissary finally joined the Prophets.
The head of the Bajoran provisional government. One of the early ones was assassinated by the Kohn-Ma very soon after the end of the Occupation. Kalem Apren afterwards held the office until his death in 2371; Kai Winn was appointed to fill it until the elections. Shakaar decided to run for it, and won. The term is at least six years.

A period of Bajoran history. Sisko was present at the reopening of a library on Bajor which had manuscripts dating to before its fall.

A famous poem by Akorem Laan. Kira told Akorem that every schoolchild on Bajor can recite it from memory.
Gratitude Festival- "Accession"
The biggest holiday of the year on Bajor, celebrated also on DS9. The purpose is to put troubles behind and start fresh. At the opening ceremony, a gong is struck several times, after which the Presider lights a fire in a large drum, chanting. He or she then burns the first renewal scroll. For the next 26 hours, various entertainments are enjoyed while people burn their renewal scrolls.
- "The Nagus", "Fascination"
The festival was celebrated at the end of 2374 ("Tears of the Prophets"), though previously it had been held in the middle of the year. Speculation: 2374's celebration was delayed because of the war.
Ha'maraA new Bajoran holiday, celebrated on the anniversary of the Emissary's (Sisko's) arrival. There is a festival of lights on its eve, and fasting is observed on the day itself. Kira didn't think it a coincidence that Sisko scheduled the trade discussions with the Karemma during Ha'mara.

A sort of flashback sometimes experienced by people who have been exposed to an Orb, triggered by an excess of neuropeptides, according to Bashir. The Bajorans believe that you only have orb shadows if you have been ignoring what the Prophets were trying to tell you. Sisko had two orb shadows in which he saw Kai Opaka.
Orbs- "Accession"
Nine hourglass-shaped energy vortices, found over the last 10,000 years in the Bajoran system, five of them in the Denorios Belt. They may have been probes sent out by the inhabitants of the wormhole. A person who looks into an Orb will either relive a moment from their past or see mysterious visions. These visions may last for minutes, hours, or days of objective time. Each Orb also has its own particular unique property; three are the Orb of Change, the Orb of Wisdom, and the Orb of Time. The Orbs are religious artifacts to the Bajorans, who also call them the "tears of the prophets". All but one were stolen by the Cardassians. Winn chided Bareil for exposing Kira to one without authorization from the Vedek Assembly ("The Circle").
Orb of ChangeThe third Orb, the one loaned by Kai Opaka to Sisko and kept by Bareil. It was the only one not stolen by the Cardassians. Also called the Orb of Prophecy and Change, or the Orb of Prophecy. It has existed at least since 3000 years ago, when Trakor encountered it and made his prophecies. It is considered to be very powerful, and encounters are strenuous even for healthy people.

The translation of the Bajoran writing on the back of Sarah Sisko's locket. There is no mention of any such orb in the ancient Bajoran texts; but Sisko believed he was being guided to discover it on Tyree. He did so; the orb contained an imprisoned Prophet, which, when freed, shot into the Bajoran wormhole and cast out the pah-wraith that was in there.
Orb of Time- "Image in the Sand"/"Shadows and Symbols"
The Cardassian government was sending it back to Bajor on the Defiant, when Darvin knocked out the deputy guarding it and used it to transport the ship back 105 years.
- "Trials and Tribble-ations"
Kira consulted it at the temple of Iponu to learn the truth about her mother.
Orb of Wisdom- "Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night"
Zek obtained it from a contact on Cardassia III and took it into the wormhole to use it to contact the Prophets. Quark later did the same thing. Zek had been going to give it to the Bajorans, but afterwards planned to make them pay through the nose for it.

pah-wraiths- "Rapture"
Beings in Bajoran mythology, who, according to the legend of Koss'Moran, were "false Prophets", banished from the Celestial Temple and imprisoned in crystal fire cages in the Bajoran Fire Caves. There are 6427 references to them in the DS9 computer's databanks.
palukoo -- See under Flora and Fauna. In "The Assignment", one pah-wraith took over Keiko's body when she visited the Fire Caves, and held it hostage to force O'Brien to do some reconfigurations which would turn the station into a chroniton array to kill the wormhole aliens so the pah-wraiths could return. A year later, in "The Reckoning", another pah-wraith possessed Jake Sisko's body to duel with a Prophet. A third pah-wraith was freed from another Bajoran artifact by Dukat in "Tears of the Prophets", and possessed him to destroy the Orb of Contemplation. It assaulted the Celestial Temple until the Emissary freed a Prophet which cast it out ("Shadows and Symbols").
Gul Dukat, who believed himself to be the pah-wraith's Emissary, plotted to free the rest of the pah-wraiths from the Fire Caves, by enlisting Kai Winn's aid. In the end, however, the pah-wraiths were sealed in the caves forever when the Tome of the Kosst Amojan was cast into the abyss ("What You Leave Behind").
Peldor Festival
An ancient Bajoran celebration, during which temple chimes would be rung, and bateret leaves and incense burned. Sisko had a vision in which he was in B'Hala during a Peldor Festival. (Speculation: "peldor" may be the Bajoran word for gratitude, and the Peldor Festival may be another name for the Gratitude Festival.)

The Reckoning
An event prophesied in an ancient tablet found under B'Hala. It refers to a battle between good and evil, represented respectively by a Prophet and a pah-wraith, after which Bajor will either be destroyed or enter a "golden age". The Reckoning began in late 2374 when the Emissary freed the combatants from a stone tablet, but the battle was disrupted by Kai Winn, leaving the future in doubt.

A piece of parchment on which, during the Gratitude Festival, people write down their troubles. They then burn the scroll, symbolically freeing themselves of those troubles. The Presider burns the first one at the opening ceremony.
Rite of Separation- "Fascination"
An old Bajoran custom, in which two lovers who plan to break up spend several days "celebrating" their parting, remembering the good times, and seeking out new opportunities. It includes a ceremony in which the couple shares a cup, reciting a litany, and then one of them (in this case, the woman) smashes the cup; this is done before a witness. Bashir and Leeta went to Risa with Dax, Worf, and Quark in order to enact the rite.

springball- "The Storyteller"
A Bajoran sport, played with a racquet-shaped mitt on one hand. Kira and Bareil shared an interest in it, and played together. Kira also later played it with Odo.
tabletHere is a description of springball from the script of "For the Cause":
The Court is a redress of the Cargo Bay. The far wall has markings to indicate goals and foul lines, while the two side walls are blank. The back of the court has benches set up and a CROWD is watching the match from behind a forcefield, which forms the back wall of the court. The game is played by two people at a time and is a sort of full contact handball. The players try to hit the ball inside a clearly marked oval on the far wall without hitting the foul zones. The players can "body check" each other to screw up a shot or to steal a shot of their own, but there's no punching or kicking allowed. A player can also grab the ball out of the air with an ungloved hand, but then has to stand in place and throw the ball off the wall to set up a "shot" with the glove (only a hit with the glove can score).First mentioned in "Shadowplay"; shown being played in "For the Cause".
An ancient stone relic discovered under B'Hala, directly below its temple in the midst of an even older city. Part of its inscription, in ancient Bajoran, read, "Welcome, Emissary"; another part dealt with the Reckoning and the possible destruction of Deep Space Nine. Sisko took the tablet to the station for study; when he smashed it, it released a Prophet and a pah-wraith.

When Kai Winn opened it to learn how to free the pah-wraiths, she found that the pages were blank. However, when she later dripped Solbor's blood onto them after stabbing him, the writing became visible.
- "The Changing Face of Evil"
Dukat attempted to read it by himself and was blinded by a bolt of energy from a symbol in the book; apparently the pah-wraiths' way of enforcing the stricture against anyone but the Kai reading it.
- "When It Rains..."
After Winn completed her study, she took the book with her and Dukat to the Fire Caves, and followed the prescribed ritual. When Sisko tackled Dukat, and they both fell into the fires, the book was destroyed. The Sarah Prophet told Sisko afterwards that the book had been the key to the pah-wraiths' imprisonment, and that with its destruction, the wraiths were now sealed in the Fire Caves forever.
